The garden is 1 1/2 acres in size on a south facing slope; it is in the valley of the River Itchen and is surrounded, but not overwhelmed, by mature trees, thus there are no significant views from the garden, but it does not feel enclosed. There is a good depth of alkaline soil above solid chalk and flint but the garden in somewhat of a frost pocket.
I wanted the garden I would create to:
- Be in keeping with the countryside.
- Contain interest throughout the year.
- Be as easy as possible to maintain.
- Be integrated with the cottage.
- Incorporate views and vitas from the cottage.
- Be welcoming.
- Be as if it should never have been any other way.
The design principles I followed were taken from Garden Design by Dame Sylvia Crowe.
- Style
- Unity
- Space division
- Scale
- Time
